I don’t know about you, but I thought Mr. Alper’s slide show about the Peace Corps was terrific! I wanted to show how Kennedy’s program has continued through to today. I hope you got the sense from the presentation that the call to service doesn’t have to simply extend to the military. I’m definately an admirer of the Peace Corps and its aims.
We’re going to move on to other things now, President Kennedy’s domestic and international agenda was called the “New Frontier” much like Roosevelt’s “New Deal” or Johnson’s “Great Society” (which we cover in the next couple of weeks), this package of programs covered everything from Economic, and Social Justice programs all the way through to Defense, and the race for Space. Many of the programs that Kennedy started, he didn’t get to see begin to work because of his assassination.
While I don’t want to simply gloss over Kennedy’s faults, and believe me when I say that there were many, I do think it’s important for us to recognize that the Kennedy Administration took our nation in an entirely new direction than his predecessors
